Description

This is a three-storey, two-bay house located on the north side of Corry’s Square in Newry, County Down. It was built in the early 1860s, likely between 1860 and 1879, alongside the adjoining house and a pair on the opposite corner, when the houses along Maginnis Street were constructed. The building was not shown on the 1861 Ordnance Survey map but is referenced in the 1865 Valuation revision book.

The house shares a hipped roof covered with artificial slate with its neighbour. The exterior is largely finished with cement render. The south elevation incorporates stepped render quoins on the right. The main entrance, on the ground floor right, is a modern six-panelled timber door with an obscured glass panel above. To the left of the entrance is a modern plastic window with a granite sill. Each upper floor features two similar plastic windows, mirroring the placement of the openings below, though the second-floor windows are shorter. The east elevation, facing Maginnis Street, is also rendered and has no windows. The west elevation is a party wall shared with the adjacent property. The rear, or north, elevation is also cement rendered. A modern timber and glass door and a single-story, monopitched extension (currently unfinished) are attached to the rear wall; the extension incorporates a plastic window. Landing windows, with a similar plastic frame, are present between the ground and first, and first and second floors. Similar windows are located at the right side of the rear elevation. A rendered wall with a modern plywood door encloses the rear yard, also facing Maginnis Street. Most original features have been removed and replaced, meaning that the house exhibits little historic or architectural interest.
