Description
Corbally is a substantial two-storey farmer's house dating to around 1825, built on a rise to the west of Downpatrick Road, roughly a mile south-west of Killyleagh. The building is largely intact apart from modern window frames.
The front façade faces south and is symmetrical. At the centre of the ground floor is a panelled timber door with six-pane sidelights and a radial elliptical arched fanlight. To the left of the doorway is a window, and to the right is another, with three more windows to the first floor. All windows now have modern multi-pane timber frames in a Georgian-like style. The entire façade is finished in unpainted roughcast with smooth render surrounds to the openings.
The west façade has a window to the left of centre on the first floor. At the very left-hand edge of this façade, an original single-storey gabled outbuilding is abutted against the main house. A modern aluminium-framed greenhouse has been erected to the south gable of the outbuilding. The east façade has a window on both ground and first floors to the left. To the right of these is a small single-storey flat-roofed shed extension with a large water tank on its roof, a small single-pane window to the south and a timber-sheeted door to the north.
To the rear, there is a central single-storey lean-to projection which is original. The east face of this lean-to has a timber-sheeted door, and the north face has a small window. Either side of the lean-to on the main house façade are small windows, with two more widely spaced on the first floor.
The hipped roof is slated and has two centrally located rendered chimney stacks. The abutting outbuilding to the west has a timber-sheeted pedestrian door and timber-sheeted carriage arch on its east façade. A large modern corrugated iron barn has been erected abutting the west side of the outbuilding.
Historical records indicate that a building stood on this site from at least 1834, when it appeared on the Ordnance Survey map. Contemporary valuation records show the house was relatively newly built at that time with the same dimensions as the present dwelling minus the small eastern extension, suggesting construction around 1825. The resident circa 1835 was James Clelland, and James Lawther was listed as resident in 1863. The present owner's family acquired the property in 1947, prior to which it had been owned by a Mr Brown.
