Bridge SW of Donard Bridge, Donard Park, Newcastle, Ballaghbeg, Co Down

A single-span, rubble-built footbridge was constructed in 1865. It is located within Donard Park, southwest of Donard Bridge and southwest of Newcastle town centre, on the slopes of the Mournes. The bridge is built of random rubble with low parapets, lacking copings. A date stone is present on the northeast face, featuring mid-20th century numerals in an Art Deco style, consistent with those on Donard Bridge. A more modern, primarily concrete bridge sits further southwest.

Originally built within the demesne surrounding Donard Lodge, the Newcastle residence of the Annesley family, the bridge's construction followed the family’s acquisition of the land from Anthony Magennis in 1747. Donard Lodge, designed by Duff and Thomas Jackson with revisions by builder John Lynn in the early 1830s, was demolished in 1966. The demesne is now managed by the Forest Service. An 1859 Ordnance Survey map depicts Donard Bridge and two footbridges southwest of it, one of which occupied the site of the current bridge.
