Description

This is a two-storey terrace house located on the north-east side of Downpatrick Street in Crossgar. It likely dates from before 1834, although it was probably built shortly before that date, given the limited development in Crossgar prior to 1810. The building has a general urban vernacular appearance, but has undergone modern alterations including a shop front and replacement window frames.

The front façade, facing roughly south-west, features a modern shop front to the left of a central entrance, which consists of a partially glazed stable door. A single house window with a modern frame is to the right of the entrance. Above are three similar windows, irregularly spaced. The front façade is rendered and painted. The rear of the building has a long, single-storey flat-roofed extension covering the entire ground floor, with two small, widely spaced windows on the first floor, also with modern frames. The rear façade is also rendered. The roof is covered in natural slate to the front, with the slates diminishing in size towards the ridge, and artificial slate to the rear. Two brick chimney stacks are visible, and the rainwater goods are primarily PVC.

Buildings were shown on an Ordnance Survey map dating from 1834, and contemporary valuation returns confirm their two-storey height. Originally a single dwelling, the house was occupied by John Craig around 1863. A photograph from 1966 shows that it had a shop front at that time, which may have been of 19th-century origin. The building was substantially renovated in the 1980s.
