Description

The laundry building, constructed between 1900 and 1919, serves as a factory within the extensive complex of St. Clare’s Convent. It is situated at the south-east corner of the main convent block and continues to perform an important service for the convent. The building is a one-storey, three-bay structure oriented north-south. It features a pitched natural slate roof with raised verges coped with concrete, including moulded kneeler stones, and a raised rectangular ventilator towards the north end of the ridge. Ogee cast-iron gutters run along the roofline. The walls are lined with smooth cement render, rising from a raised base course. All openings have segmental heads, and the windows have concrete cills. A double-leaf, partly-glazed timber entrance door, with a transom light above, is centrally positioned on the east elevation, flanked by a 6/6 sliding sash window to the left and a projecting two-stage chimney to the right. The chimney, which rises above the eaves and originally served an abutting building now demolished, incorporates a hearth at the base of its external face. The south gable has a door at the right, with a transom over (now sheeted over), and a 6/6 sliding sash window to the left. The west elevation is blank and heavily overgrown with vegetation, while the north gable has a pair of top-opening metal-framed windows. Drying racks are of particular note. The building first appears in a valuation revision book entry from 1915.
