O'Hagan Bridge, Newry, Co Down

The O’Hagan Bridge, built between 1860 and 1879, carries the Mall over a former millrace, now culverted, at the west end of O’Hagan Street in Newry. The bridge was erected following the culverting of the millrace, which was associated with a corn mill located at the corner of Lower Water Street and Mill Street, to enable the creation of O’Hagan Street.

The bridge is a single-span structure with a shallow segmental arch made entirely of granite. It features spandrels and parapets constructed of squared random rubble with hammer-dressed faces. The west face of the bridge is decorated with rusticated voussoirs. The finely dressed granite parapet copings project outwards, and a chamfered string course runs just above the arch’s crown. The parapets end in square, projecting piers, each topped with finely dressed, shallow pyramidal caps. A section of the parapet breaks forward, supporting a cast-iron lamp standard (currently without a light). The street-facing side of the cap is inscribed with "O’Hagan Bridge/ Built A.D. 1874." The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and resides within a conservation area.
