Description
The graveyard is a walled enclosure of irregular shape, containing a collection of memorials dating primarily from the 18th century, alongside some scattered field stones. It is located in a rural setting, with its front wall elevated above the road and set back slightly behind a grass verge. The boundary wall is constructed of rubble stone, largely covered with smeared cement pointing. A gateway provides access directly from the road via a set of rough stone steps flanked by a simple iron handrail. The gateway is defined by a pair of circular stone piers, partially obscured by overgrown creeper, and a pair of old ironwork gates with arrow-head railings.
Inside the walls, the graveyard is grassed, with a raised central area that incorporates loose field stones, potentially the remains of a previous church. A number of stone memorial slabs are present, some dating from the late 18th century, alongside a derelict and partially collapsed iron railed enclosure. The graveyard’s origins are likely Early Christian, with a church built on the site in the early 17th century and subsequently destroyed and rebuilt. A "large edifice in the later English style" was erected in 1707, which was later replaced by the current Church of Ireland church, St John’s, Ballinderry, built in 1849 on a new site. Following the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland, the site was transferred to the local District Council of Magherafelt. Legible grave slabs date from the 1770s to the 1790s.
