Description

This is a four-arch, hump-backed bridge of roughly built rubble stone, dating to around 1800. It spans the Ballinderry River, situated to the south of Ballinderry within the Ardagh / Derrycrin (Eglish) townland, northeast of Cookstown. The bridge is a robust and well-proportioned example of an early nineteenth-century structure, with a rustic character evident in its roughly hewn stonework. It is well-preserved and remains largely in its original condition, representing a rare survival of bridges from this era in active use.

The bridge is oriented roughly north-south and features rubble stone walls with cut and splayed stone capping along the roadside. Segmental-headed arches are formed with dressed cut-stone voussoirs, and the arch soffits are finished with smooth render. Splayed cut-stone cutwaters are positioned between the arches, also with splayed capping, and each cutwater is surmounted by a squared metal wall tie/pattress plate. A modern concrete external staircase is located on the east side of the bridge, on the south bank, with metal railings. A random rubble stone buttress wall stands below the staircase, partially demolished, and a further buttress wall is present on the north bank side. A cut stone datestone is recessed into the west side of the bridge on the south bank, although the engraving is currently unreadable. The bridge's overall width is approximately 10 metres.

The bridge, identified as ‘Ballinderry Bridge,’ appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1832 onwards, and on subsequent maps through to 1937. Its humped back and four arches suggest a construction date within the early 1800s.

The bridge exhibits notable characteristics of industrial archaeological interest and possesses local historical interest.
