Description

60 James Street, Cookstown is a small terraced house built around 1833. It is of limited architectural value but holds historical interest and forms part of a group with the two properties to its north.

The building is a two-storey rectangular structure with a two-storey extension to the rear and a further single-storey lean-to dating from around the 1950s. The front elevation, which faces directly onto James Street, is rendered and painted. The ground floor has a doorway to the right and a window to the left, both now boarded up. The upper floor has 1/1 timber sliding sash windows set on painted cut stone sills. Modern signage is attached to the upper level. The rear east elevation is finished in dry dash render. The main roof is covered in natural slate, with two rendered chimneys with profiled capping. Cast-iron gutters front the elevation, with replacement uPVC rainwater goods to the rear.

The two-storey rear extension has a mono-pitched roof with an assortment of timber casement windows and external walls of dry dash render. The single-storey lean-to has a timber casement window and door, with artificial slate roofing and uPVC rainwater goods.

The property has been much altered internally and to the rear. The building is currently vacant.

Historical records indicate that this property and its neighbour to the north (present number 58) were originally a single concern. Valuation records from 1835 describe the original building as an old house and shop, with the house occupied by George Hollins and the shop by John Moffet. The house dimensions were recorded as 19½ft × 21½ × 18 feet, with an upper section over the shop of 16 × 21½ × 9 feet, a return of 15½ × 17 × 15 feet, thatched offices of 46½ × 14 × 12 feet, and the shop measured as 16 × 21½ × 9 feet. By 1859 the property was held by William Morgan with Matthew S. Glasgow as the immediate lessor. By 1880 William Morgan had acquired the lease of both the house and shop. Thomas Morgan was recorded as leaseholder and occupant in 1914, followed by Annie Turner in 1924. The lease passed to James McVeigh in 1928 and to Margaret McVeigh by 1936. The property was noted as vacant in 1938, with John Quinn occupying it in 1939 and Kathleen Quinn from 1949 onwards. Kathleen Quinn remained in residence until at least 1972.
