Description

This is an example of an early 19th century farmhouse, likely built between 1820 and 1839, located on Aghintain Road, Clogher. It is greatly altered by renovations carried out under a Housing Executive ‘improvement grant’.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a three-bay front elevation originally in the Georgian style. It has an L-shaped plan, with a two-storey kitchen return. The structure has undergone extensive renovation, leaving only the fine fanlight over the entrance as an indication of its former character. The building features new timber windows, a new door, dry dash rendering, and a slated roof. The kitchen return contains one window, and a single-storey pitched extension contains a door. A good vernacular stone barn, two stories high, is located in the courtyard to the rear. A coach house features three pointed arches. Exterior steps lead to the first floor level, with a small storage cupboard located behind the door underneath the steps. The building is whitewashed and the slate roof retains traditional gable and eaves details. The circular gateposts to the front of the house remain unchanged.

A building is shown on the 1831 Ordnance Survey map for Londonderry sheet 23. The current occupants inherited the house in 1980 and renovated it with a Housing Executive Grant at that time, keeping only the fanlight as an original feature. The building was previously described in 1970 as a two-storey house with harled and whitened walls and a slated roof, originally having double-hung windows (D/H) with full glazing bars. The entrance was recessed in a semi-circular opening with a panelled door and curvilinear glazing in the fanlight. The gable facing the roadside was rendered, and a one-storey gabled extension, three windows wide, existed at the rear. The house is privately owned and was delisted on 22nd July 1998.
