Description

The Village Pump at The Rock, Sandholes, Dungannon, is a good example of a rotary water pump situated in a prominent central location, serving as a reminder of the era when street-side access to drinking water was the norm.

The pump features a splay-shaped column without decorative elements. The cap is decorated with fluting and an acorn finial. It includes a spout lug but lacks a pedestal. A metal cover is inscribed with “Winnington & Co / Wilson St/Belfast,” and the column is inscribed “George Espey & Son/Cookstown.” The pump is surrounded by a low rail.

The pump is recorded on Ordnance Survey maps from 1906 and 1935 (held at PRONI, reference OS 10/5/38/9/1 and 2), suggesting a likely installation date around 1905/06. Further details, including evidence supporting the installation date, can be found in the Environment Heritage Service report ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’ by Fred Hammond (January 1997), Pump No 3.

The pump is of industrial archaeological interest and possesses group value relating to its style, proportions, ornamentation, and setting. It holds local historical interest and reflects social, cultural, and economic considerations of the period, also demonstrating some rarity. It is currently owned by the local government.
