Telephone Kiosk 120 Lough Fea Road, Cookstown, BT80 9QL

This is a red telephone kiosk of type ‘K6’, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott between 1936 and 1953. Approximately 184 of these kiosks are reportedly left in Northern Ireland, with very few still functioning as telephone boxes. This kiosk has a cast-iron body with a timber door, complete with leather hinges and original opening mechanism, all painted red. It features replacement perspex glazing and a blank rear. Each elevation displays the symbolic ‘Tudor Crown’ motif above the word TELEPHONE. The kiosk is located at 120 Lough Fea Road, approximately 4 miles northwest of Cookstown, set on a small concrete hard standing immediately beyond a roadside grass verge and adjacent to the entrance of a small rural farm. The kiosk was constructed between 1940 and 1959. The design was intended to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V, with the ‘K6’ model being built from 1936 to 1968. The design changed little during that period, and this kiosk’s Tudor Crown indicates it is likely a pre-1953 model. The kiosk is well-maintained, and its modern equipment was in full working order during a survey in November 2018.
