Description

This mid-nineteenth-century manse, dating from approximately 1880 to 1899, was located at 6 Joymount, Carrickfergus. It was demolished around the year 2000 and replaced with a larger manse, a project approved by the Department of the Environment.

The original building was a two-story structure with rendered walls and a slated roof. It featured double-hung windows with cross glazing bars, set within moulded three-centre arched openings. The entrance was characterized by panelled pilasters rising to a moulded archivolt and a faceted keystone. The doorway was flanked by sidelights, and the elliptical-arched fanlight above was glazed with radial glazing bars. The manse was originally three windows wide.

The manse first appeared on an Ordnance Survey map of 1902. Griffith’s Valuation of 1860 documented a manse under construction, occupied by the Reverend James Warwick, who leased it from the trustees. The valuation in 1860 placed the value of the manse and associated office at £17 50s, though offices were yet to be built. Subsequent valuation revisions from 1894 onwards recorded the occupier as the Reverend Samuel B. Stewart. These revisions also detailed a Presbyterian Church House, office, and yard, valued at £20 50s. The Presbyterian History Society website suggests a construction date of 1859. Following demolition circa 2000, the replacement manse was built thirty feet to the north.

The manse was located within the Carrickfergus conservation area. It was initially recorded on the heritage list but was subsequently delisted on January 18, 2010. Ownership was by the Presbyterian Church.
