Description

This is a rare example of a cow-tailed water pump located in a public space. Dating from between 1880 and 1899, it is a closed-head lever type pump with a plain column and cap. Inscribed on the column is a flag logo indicating manufacture by Lee Howl & Co, Tipton, England, along with the words "Made in England" and the measurement "2"". The pump is identified as a "Paragon cistern pump" and stands on a concrete pedestal within a hedged niche beside number 19 Carnlea Road.

Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1903 and 1920 (PRONI Ref OS 10/1/27/11/1 and 2), show the presence of a well at this location. According to a local informant, the pump was installed by James Madill, at the prompting of Ballymena District Council, to provide water for nearby houses. Further details are available in the Environment Heritage Service Report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond, January 1997 (Pump no 48). The pump is of industrial archaeological interest and possesses local historical and social importance. It was recorded as derelict at one point.
