Description

This is a late 19th-century cow-tailed water pump, situated on the north side of Main Street, near the library in Broughshane, Ballymena, County Antrim. It stands in a prominent position in the village centre and serves as a reminder of a time when public sources were the only readily available drinking water.

The pump is of the lever (closed head) type, featuring a distinctive cow-tailed handle. It has a straight column decorated with spiral motifs. The cap is fluted and topped with an acorn finial. A spout lug is present, but there is no pedestal. The pump is inscribed with the name 'Hugh Casey B'Vadden'. A modern plaque affixed to the cast iron railings reads ‘Jubilee Pump/Erected 1897’. The pump is accompanied by a stone trough.

The structure was noted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1925 (six-inch to one mile scale), referenced as PRONI OS 10/1/33/6/1, and is further documented in Fred Hamond’s 1997 report, ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’, under Pump No 4. The listing covers the pump and its surrounding railings.

The pump represents a significant example of industrial archaeology and has local interest; it is valued for its style, proportions, ornamentation, and setting.
