Description

This is a relatively plain two-storey terrace house of possibly around 1860, originally comprising two separate properties (numbers 20 and 22). It is situated on the north side of The Vennel in Glenarm and features an integral carriage archway and Edwardian gabled half-dormers.

The front elevation faces roughly south and is asymmetrical. On the original number 20 (left side of the whole elevation) there is a modern panelled door to the ground floor and a modern timber top-hung window above it. To the first floor are two further similar top-hung windows. On the former number 22 (right side of the elevation), a recent panelled timber door is set at ground floor level. Immediately adjoining this door, within the same opening, is a plain sash window. To the left of the door is an elliptical arch-headed carriage arch with large timber-sheeted doors. The first floor of this section contains two plain sash windows, each set within a small gabled half-dormer, with the roof gutter carried across the front of the upper sashes.

The rear elevation shows contrasting fenestration. To the ground floor, the left side has one small 3/3 sash window, the centre is occupied by the elliptical-headed carriage arch, and the right side has a large single-storey flat-roofed extension in concrete brick. To the first floor, there is a small 6/3 sash window to the left and a small 6/6 sash window over the carriage arch at the centre. Two modern top-hung timber windows occupy the far right of the first floor.

The front elevation is finished in painted lined render, whilst the rear is whitewashed rubble stone. The gabled roof is slated, with two ridge chimneystacks: the western stack is plain rendered, while the other is taller and constructed in polychrome brick. Cast iron rainwater goods are present to the front, with mainly PVC goods to the rear.

Historical records suggest the building was constructed in the later 1800s, replacing earlier single-storey dwellings. The presence of gabled half-dormers and the polychrome brick chimney indicate that work was carried out to the eastern half of the building (former number 22) around 1900. The property does not meet the criteria for listing and is not of special architectural or historic interest.
