Description

Victoria Cemetery is a rectangular burial ground located to the west of Victoria Road in Carrickfergus. The cemetery was established in 1904 and gifted to the town by Hugh G Legg Esq of Cape Town in memory of his parents, who were residents of Carrickfergus. The Urban District Council of Carrickfergus provided the cemetery at a cost of £2,500.

The cemetery is enclosed by a rubblestone boundary wall with an opening to its north boundary providing access to the extension of the cemetery beyond. Within the grounds are bitmac driveways and footpaths laid out symmetrically among a variety of stone and iron grave markers spanning the 20th century.

The principal architectural feature is the elaborate gate screen at the southeast corner, comprising a pair of decorative wrought-iron gates supported on a pair of square-plan cast-iron piers with decorative panels. These piers also support a wrought-iron depressed arch containing iron lettering reading "VICTORIA CEMETERY". To either side of the main gates is a wrought-iron pedestrian gate, each supported on a large square-plan rock-faced sandstone ashlar pier with pyramidal capstone. Extending from both piers is a low rock-faced stone wall laid on an S-plan with sandstone ashlar coping and spear-headed wrought-iron railings terminating in a further stone pier of the same design. To the north end, enclosing the front garden to the gate lodge, there is a further wrought-iron pedestrian gate and railing with low wall and piers as above. A cast-iron plaque mounted on the wrought-iron archway records that the cemetery was opened on 10th December 1904 and was presented by Hugh G Legg Esq in memory of his father and mother.

The two-storey entrance lodge, a detached brick and render building, was built circa 1905 and faces south to the north of the gate screen. It is set on an L-plan with its east side elevation facing Victoria Road. The lodge is two bays wide and has a single-storey extension to the rear containing toilets and a garage. The pitched natural slate roof is topped with terracotta ridgecomb tiles and features a pair of redbrick chimneystacks to either gable end, each having moulded cornice, dog-tooth stringcourse and terracotta pots. The front elevation has replacement plastic fascia and plastic rainwater goods, and the two gables feature replacement timber finials. The walling is painted rough-cast render with redbrick quoins to all corners and three redbrick buttresses to the east gable. A feature redbrick chimneystack to either gable end has a staggered profile. The pointed-headed front door and window openings are arranged in pairs to the front elevation with shared concrete sills. The windows and door are uPVC replacements. The gate screen exhibits considerable architectural interest through its elaborate wrought ironwork and quality stone masonry. However, the gate lodge has undergone recent alterations which have compromised its original character.
