Description
Carrickfergus Congregational Church is an early twentieth-century double-height church built around 1910, located on the west side of Albert Road at the corner of Unity Street. Executed in red brick in the Romanesque style, it is an imposing building of distinctly urban character that functions as a local landmark in this highly developed area.
The church is rectangular on plan, facing east, with a pitched natural slate roof and finial to the east gable. Raking brick cornices rest on exaggerated kneeler stones to both gables. The external walls are constructed in red brick laid in English garden wall bond with accent mouldings and a brick cornice throughout, all set over a brick plinth. Windows are round-headed, generally grouped in pairs and plainly glazed.
The principal east gable is dominated by three moulded relief arches springing from brick pilasters in a symmetrical arrangement. The central arch, larger than its flanking neighbours, encloses the main entrance and a grouping of three windows with the central window taller than those flanking it. Each of the two flanking arches frames a pair of windows with brick hood mouldings, surmounted by an oculus also with brick surround. A brick string course and sill course run across the elevation, with a blind roundel at the apex. The double-leaf entrance doors are of panelled timber, set within a double rebated opening and topped by a semi-circular hood moulding.
The south elevation is six pairs of windows wide, each pair recessed in a bay framed by brick pilasters. The right bay features a pair of windows at ground floor level surmounted by an oculus. The left bay abuts the return. The west gable is rendered with raking cornice and is adjoined by a two-storey extension with deeply overhanging pitched natural slate roof to the centre. The north elevation mirrors the arrangement of the south elevation, with outside bays detailed as the flanking bays of the main elevation. Leaded stained glass appears in the third and fifth windows from the left on this elevation.
The church is bounded to Albert Road by wrought iron railings on a masonry plinth wall. An attached linking block connects to the church hall to the southwest, which forms a coherent group with the main building despite frontage to separate streets. Rainwater goods comprise cast-iron box profile downpipes and ogee profiled guttering. Windows are timber framed with fixed glazing and masonry sills.
The building is externally and internally well preserved. It does not appear on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1902, but a town map corresponding with Valuation Revision books from 1894 to 1929 shows it added in pen, listed as an "Independent Meeting House" under exemptions in the Revisions of 1908 to 1915, valued at £40. A modern extension was added to the southwest corner.
