Description

A detached symmetrical polygonal single-storey three-bay red-brick bungalow in the Arts-and-Crafts style with an inverted V-plan, built c.1950 and located north of Fort Hill, Lisburn. Hipped roof with cedar shingles, steeply pitched with overhanging sprocketted eaves. Tall red-brick chimneystack to rear. Replacement aluminium ogee rainwater goods with original cast-iron downpipes and hoppers. Walling is stretcher-bonded red-brick with curved bricks at corners and decorative vertical brick course at plinth level. Windows are original multi-paned leaded steel casements made by Critall McKinney in hardwood sub-frames to eaves level with projecting brick sills; replacement aluminium window to kitchen in rear elevation; eyebrow dormer window to south; roof-light to east and west. The principal elevation faces south, comprising central entrance bay flanked by projecting wings at a 35 degree angle, each containing a window opening. Entrance is accessed by two semi-circular brick and slab stone steps and comprises double-leaf vertical-panelled Burma teak door with decorative cast-iron strap-hinges, finger-plates and round handles in a chamfered recess. Above entrance is eyebrow dormer window. The west elevation has two window openings. The north elevation has central section with side bays at a 35 degree angle to left and right; right bay contains, from right, projecting chimney-flue, slender leaded window and timber-sheeted door with transom light, accessed by three masonry steps; left bay contains window at far left. The central section has 2 Critall steel casement windows in a timber sub-frame and 1 replacement window to the kitchen. The east elevation has two window openings. Setting: Fort Hill is a mature elevated site overlooking Friends School playing fields to north and Wallace Park to south, containing a number of detached villas on large sites dating mainly from the Edwardian period. Glen Shira has a large lawned sloping garden to rear with unspoiled views over the playing fields; enclosed to all sides by mature trees and hedgerow. To west is the original red-brick garage with hipped shingle roof and original timber-sheeted up-and-over garage door; abutted by a timber-roof car-port. Small garden to front bounded to road by stone wall laid in courses with mature shrubbery.
