Description
Broomhedge Gospel Hall is a small free-standing single-storey, single-cell, gable-ended Gospel Hall built circa 1932 to 1935. Located on Halfpenny Gate Road, south of the main Lisburn Road and approximately three miles east of Moira, it stands within a largely rural setting now surrounded by single and two-storey residential buildings.
The building is a good example of a corrugated metal structure, a type increasingly rare in Northern Ireland. The principal gable faces south and is abutted by a diminished gable-ended porch with matching details. The porch has a single window on its south face with the entrance located on the left cheek. Both west and east elevations are symmetrically arranged with three windows deep. The rear gable is abutted by a single-storey corrugated flat-roofed extension with rendered walls, which extends beyond the width of the main structure and provides south-facing rear access doors.
The roofing comprises pitched artificial slate with clay ridge tiles and clay finials, along with moulded timber barge and fascia boards and panelled soffits. The walls are clad in corrugated metal. Windows are steel-framed casements with timber cills and heads. The door is plain timber. Replacement uPVC rainwater goods have been installed.
The site is bounded by hedges with a low-rising rendered wall and mild steel gate. A short lane runs parallel to the east elevation leading to a field at the rear.
The congregation at Broomhedge was formed circa 1890 following the visit of travelling evangelist David Rea from Portadown in 1879. The congregation met in various locations until the current Gospel Hall was constructed at a cost of £150. Throughout its history, the church was led by unpaid elders rather than employing a single clergyman. Many original congregation members joined the Broomhedge Temperance League, which was established during the same period. Very little alteration has been carried out to the hall since its original construction; a rendered rear shed was added sometime after completion. The building retains much of its original external character and style and timber-panelled interior, and continues to function as a church hall, providing an important role in the local community.
