Description
This single-storey house occupies a roadside frontage on the north side of the road leading from Lower Ballinderry to the church ruin beside Lough Beg, with its front elevation facing south. It dates from at least the early 19th century, though it may be considerably older.
The house is constructed of fieldstone with mud and brick infill. The front elevation to the left (west) of the entrance has been reconstructed with modern material and rendered with roughcast, while the section to the right (east) retains its original fieldstone and brick construction. At the rear, fieldstone construction returns at the ends, with a section of mud walling between. The right-hand (east) gable is a fine example of mortared fieldstone. A hipped reed thatch roof covers the building, though it is in poor condition. Only the base of the red brick chimney stack remains.
The front elevation features a ledged and sheeted door flanked to the left (west) by two window openings, now boarded up. Loose window frames are set within the building. The opening to the right (east) contains the remains of a nine-pane fixed window frame. The rear elevation has two empty openings on the left (east) side and concludes with the remains of a six-pane fixed window divided 2/2/2. There are no openings in the end walls. The interior contains exposed timbers throughout, including cruck blades which add significantly to the house's architectural interest.
The presence of hipped roof construction is rare in this location, being a considerable distance from the areas where it survived in parts of Fermanagh and Cavan. A building is shown on this site on the Ordnance Survey map of 1832–33. The house may be that recorded as occupied by Thomas Langty, with Jacob Culbert as the immediate lessor and a rateable value of 15 shillings. Most of the roof structure can be retained and strengthened. Some rebuilding of the walls will be required, including the sections of mud walling.
