Description

Reid's Shoes is a three-storey two-bay mid-terrace Georgian townhouse, probably dating from the 18th century, now in commercial use. It is located in Market Square, Lisburn, south of the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum in the city centre, and east of the junction between Market Place and Market Square.

The building has a square plan-form with rear returns. The pitched natural slate roof features clay ridge tiles, a corbelled eaves course, replacement extruded metal ogee moulded gutters, and cast-iron circular down pipes. The walling is ruled-and-lined rendered. The principal elevation faces north and is symmetrically arranged, with 6/6 and 3/6 timber sliding sash windows with horns and rectangular masonry cills on the upper floors. The first floor contains two uniformly arranged windows, with diminutive second floor windows directly above. The ground floor has been completely modernised with a shop front comprising a large single glazed pane over a plinth, a glazed door to the left, and a roller shutter hood. The front door now forms part of this modern glazed shop front. The left gable is abutted by 25 Market Square, and the right gable is abutted by 29 Market Square. The rear elevation has a single second floor window to the right and is primarily abutted by a two-storey gable-ended return, further abutted by a long single-storey extension which extends to a tangent two-storey building located at the rear of the site.

The building was probably erected in the period following the disastrous fire of 1707, when Lisburn was rapidly rebuilt to its former street plan using improved materials—brick replacing wood and slates and tiles replacing shingles. A building on this site is shown on Pattison's 1833 map. The building is similar in scale, proportions and detailing to those at the end of the row dated 1709. Nothing is known of its early history; it could not be identified in Griffith's Valuation or census records.

Although the upper floors retain their Georgian scale and proportions externally, the interior has been modernised, and the ground floor has been significantly altered by the modernisation of the shop front. These alterations detract from its architectural and historical interest. The building currently serves as a shoe shop and forms part of a terrace comprising buildings from various periods. Immediately to the right is a three-storey Victorian building; to the left is a similarly proportioned Georgian building beyond which is a large modern replacement block.
