Description

Horizon is a three-storey, two-bay mid-terrace Georgian townhouse, probably dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. Now used as commercial premises (currently a hair salon), the building is located in Market Square East, Lisburn, positioned east of the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum and north of the junction between Bridge Street and Market Square.

The building retains a square plan form with a two-storey flat-roofed extension extending to the rear. The pitched roof is covered in natural slate with clay ridge tiles, and features a red-brick chimney with corbelled upper courses and terracotta pots. The rainwater goods are modern uPVC replacements.

The principal elevation faces east and is symmetrically arranged. The walling is rendered in ruled-and-lined cement. The ground floor comprises a modern shop front with plain timber pilasters and entablature, illuminated signage at frieze level, and a modern awning. The upper floors retain Georgian proportions and style with replacement 6/6 timber sliding sash windows without horns. The first floor has a continuous cill running across both windows; the second floor windows have individual cills. A full-length plain pilaster is located to the left of the first and second floors, shared with the adjoining building at 7 Market Square. The right gable is abutted by 11 Market Square.

The rear elevation is entirely abutted by the two-storey flat-roofed extension, which comprises a large roller shutter at first-floor level and horizontal glazing to the ground floor. To the rear of the site lies a large graveyard belonging to Lisburn Cathedral.

Internally, the building has been completely modified with few surviving features of Georgian interest or distinguishable original plan form. Although the building contributes to the adjoining terrace and the historic character of Market Square, it was not considered of sufficient quality to merit listing. A building on the site is shown on Pattison's map of 1833, but the exact date of the current structure could not be established, and nothing is known of its early history.
