Description

Former School House, Ballymacbrennan

A detached two-storey stone building erected around 1830, this former schoolhouse stands on the north side of Saintfield Road in a landscaped setting. It represents a significant example of 19th-century civic provision for rural education and demonstrates the social and architectural history of this part of Lisburn.

The main building is rectangular on plan, constructed of snecked uncoursed random basalt walling with a pitched natural slate roof fitted with terracotta ridge tiles and stone verges. The roof is carried on stone eaves courses with replacement brick chimneysstacks and plastic rainwater goods. Two carved stone plaques set in redbrick surrounds are built into the walls; the left plaque reads 'The / Most Noble the / Marquis D.shir,s / Donum. / To this Parish.' while the right plaque is indecipherable.

The symmetrical south-facing front elevation displays three round-headed window openings formed in redbrick with replacement masonry sills and replacement multi-pane timber sash windows. The west gable contains two round-headed windows to the first floor and a single round-headed door opening to the ground floor with a replacement timber glazed and panelled door. The east gable has two round-headed window openings to each floor. A gabled porch with replacement timber panelled door is positioned at the rear.

A two-storey redbrick extension with corbelled yellowbrick eaves was added around 1900 to create a teacher's residence at the rear. This return is set slightly back from the original gable and is abutted by a single-storey gable-fronted redbrick glazed extension. The rear gabled elevation to the return is rendered with a single replacement timber casement window, while the remainder of the rear elevation displays exposed stone walling with a single central round-headed window opening to the ground floor containing a replacement timber sash window. The east side elevation to the return is rendered with replacement timber casement windows and a glazed panelled door. A single-storey redbrick conservatory was added during renovation work in 1999. A further extension was added to the west side elevation around 2000.

Within the landscaped grounds stand a diminutive rubblestone toilet block to the east with a replacement natural slate roof and a modern stone-faced structure to the west with uPVC windows. The property is accessed via a gravel driveway through the front lawn, enclosed to the road by a modern stone-clad wall and steel gates.

The building first appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1834 as an oblong structure captioned 'School house.' The carved stone plaque confirms that the school was granted by the Marquis of Downshire to the parish. On the second edition map of 1859, the school appears little altered, though records indicate it had joined the National School system by that date; the Griffith's Valuation of 1861 records the 'National Schoolhouse' as valued at £5 10s. The north-facing rear return, used as the teacher's residence, first appears on the third edition of the maps around 1900. As 'Ballymacbrennan School', the institution operated until around 1923 when falling attendance prompted the teacher in residence to seek its closure and claim as a beneficiary. Local farmers opposed this move and took the matter to court. The court decided to place the school in the care of a committee to operate it as a community centre, and the adjoining residence was let to tenants.

Between 1923 and 1930, a proposal to reopen the school was presented to the local authority but was unsuccessful. The former schoolhouse continued as a community centre for the next 70 years, serving as a venue for wedding receptions, meetings for the local Unionist Party, a polling station during elections, and primarily as a place for religious gatherings. A Sunday school operated in the building for several decades until around 1980, and from 1952 the Faith Mission organisation used it for Gospel Meetings and annual conferences.

The building was listed in 1988 while owned by the Trustees of Drumbeg Church, with the rear residence still occupied by tenants. Renovation work in 1999 included a new roof and the addition of a single-storey redbrick conservatory. The property was sold by Drumbeg Church in 2001 to finance the construction of a new School Hall, which opened in September 2000. Despite significant refurbishment with some loss of original fabric, the overall composition remains intact and the building retains its character and historical significance as a school house, well proportioned and simply detailed in a neo-classical idiom.
