Description

Eden Cottage is a single-storey, three-bay, direct-entry thatched house with a central hearth, built between 1820 and 1839. It stands two miles south-east of Lisburn in County Antrim, approached either from the Lisburn to Ballynahinch road, a quarter mile to the north-east, or from Hillhall Road to the north.

The original house, gabled to the road, is now partially obscured by a modern one-and-a-half-storey block finished in traditional style with cement fibre slate, plastic rainwater goods, and rendered and whitened finish. Windows in each gable light the upper-floor accommodation. All windows throughout the building are top-hung sashes constructed to give the appearance of vertically sliding units, divided into two vertical panes.

The thatched section has a block ridge with eaves cut at an angle. The skews are made of pre-cast concrete units. Two corbelled chimneys of red brick, each with two pots, rise above the right-hand gable, with one positioned above the original hearth location left of centre on the ridge.

The front elevation features a sheeted entrance door with diamond-shaped observation pane, flanked to the left (south-east) by three windows. To the right is a projection with cement fibre slates and plastic rainwater goods, containing one front window and an entrance with sheeted door and observation panel on the right-hand return, with a single window beyond. The rear elevation shows three windows from the north-west end, with a small break between the second and third openings at the line of the original hearth wall. The modern front block has one window set left of centre on this elevation. The range of buildings extends to the north-west as an outbuilding, then turns at right angles to the north-east to enclose a forecourt.

The building appears on the 1834 Ordnance Map with one outbuilding to the south-west, and a further outbuilding to the north-east is shown on the 1859 Ordnance Map. The original layout and roof structure remain as built.

The house was re-thatched by Gerry Agnew in 1981 using wheat straw, with roof structure repairs in 1987 followed by further thatching in 1988. After being vacated in 1990, the building deteriorated. A 1992 inspection by Colin Hatrick confirmed the roof structure and internal layout remained original, with fair thatch condition. By 1994 monitoring, the general structure had deteriorated and thatch was in poor condition. Re-thatching using flax was carried out by Gerry Agnew in 1997, with a full restoration scheme completed in 1998. The restoration work has been detailed in a traditional manner.
