Description

65 Main Street, Moira is a four-bay three-storey terraced townhouse built circa 1735, displaying good Georgian style and proportions. The building is rendered and faced north, with an incorporated carriage arch to the east bay. It is abutted to the rear by a two-storey return forming a T-plan, and has a two-storey rendered building to the rear constructed circa 2008, connected by a flat-roofed glazed wing.

The pitched natural slate roof is finished with terracotta ridge tiles and has a pair of rendered chimneystacks. Cast-iron guttering is supported on iron drive-through brackets with cast-iron hopper and downpipe. The walls are painted rough-cast render.

The front elevation features square-headed window openings with smooth render surrounds and painted masonry sills, containing original timber sash windows. The east bay displays an elliptical-headed carriage arch opening with vertically-sheeted timber doors and brick-lined walls. A round-headed door opening contains a replacement timber panelled door, flanked by a pair of semi-engaged fluted Doric columns on plinth blocks supporting a stepped lintel architrave and moulded archivolt with keystone and peacock fanlight. The original windows above the door and carriage arch are 6/6 timber sashes, with 3/3 to the second floor. The remaining window openings are tripartite with 4/4 sashes to the centre flanked by 2/2 sashes, all flanked by fluted mullions and a fluted stepped frieze above. The second floor has 2/2 sashes flanked by 1/1 sashes. All windows have no horns and contain cylinder glass. These early 19th-century windows in 'Wyatt' style display fine original detailing.

The rear elevation is four bays and three storeys, rendered and abutted by a gable-ended two-storey rendered return with a pitched natural slate roof and tall rendered chimneystack to the rear gable. The west elevation is abutted by the adjoining house, with the gable rising slightly higher.

The interior retains an original simple vernacular style timber staircase, original roof structure, and timber panelled window linings.

The building is understood to be the birthplace of Anne Lutton in the late 18th century. Ms Lutton is credited with bringing Methodism to Moira and authored the book "A consecrated life", written shortly before her death in 1881. There is no record of her having actually lived in the house. Historic records show John Murphy as tenant until 1882, followed by Rev John Dickson briefly, then John Irwin from 1890 until the 1950s. The 1933–57 valuation records the building as having a kitchen, scullery, pantry, two receptions and three bedrooms. An inspector's report from 1935 notes outbuildings in the yard, described as agricultural buildings including a piggery.

The building was extensively renovated and restored circa 2008 and converted to a guesthouse. It has remained in domestic use throughout its history. The building, along with 63 Main Street adjacent, forms part of an important group set back from the main road in the centre of the village and makes a significant contribution to the heritage of Moira. The building is located within a conservation area.
