Description
Cavanacaw Bridge is a single-span road bridge, built around 1850, carrying Laurel Road over Creevan Burn. The bridge is a good example of its type and indicative of infrastructure development in County Tyrone during the 19th century, possessing group value from its contribution to the surrounding area.
The bridge features squared sandstone rubble piers, abutments, and parapet, with rusticated sandstone quoins. A rockfaced sandstone string course runs to carriageway level, and squared sandstone rubble forms the parapet coping. The parapet is rounded at both the north and south ends. The main arch is semi-circular, with dressed rockfaced voussoirs squared to form spandrels, and a coursed rockfaced sandstone soffit. A smaller semi-circular flood arch is set within a square-headed recess to the north. The carriageway is approximately 5 metres wide. The bridge is situated on a rural road, south of a junction, with land to the south bounded by a timber fence.
The bridge first appeared on the 1854 Second Edition Ordnance Survey map and the road was previously shown ending on both sides of the river. The structure holds local historical interest and is also notable for its industrial archaeological significance. Cavanacaw Bridge is owned by the central government.
