Description
Barker Brothers Garage is a detached single-cell double-height garage built around 1950, located on the west side of Main Street in Seskinore. It is one of few such garages remaining from the mid-twentieth century, though it is essentially a façade in front of relatively standard shed construction and not one of the best examples of the type.
The building is rectangular in plan with a pitched corrugated asbestos roof with a shallower pitch to the eaves and a leaded ridge, finished with clear rooflight panels. The walls are roughcast rendered over a smooth rendered plinth. Windows are square-headed metal casements set in smooth architrave with painted masonry sills.
The principal elevation faces east and consists of a gabled breakfront with stepped parapet and smooth rendered plat banding. The central feature is a large square-headed opening containing a vertically-sheeted sliding door surmounted by signage reading 'BARKER BROS / MOTOR ENGINEERS / SHELL SERVICES'. This is flanked on the left by a fixed glazed window and on the right by a window opening (now blocked), each surmounted by a smooth rendered emblem. The south elevation is three windows wide with a square-headed timber panelled entrance door at the right. The west elevation displays exposed concrete blocks with a central large square-headed opening containing a sliding steel door, flanked on each side by windows. The north elevation is three windows wide and is abutted on the right by a single-storey flat-roofed garage.
The garage is set within a mechanic's yard accessed directly from the street at the east. A multi-bay two-storey outbuilding stands to the west, abutted by a lean-to extension with pitched natural slate roof. The walls are roughcast render with metal casement windows, and external steps at the south provide access to the first floor. A single-storey former shop building stands to the south in garage style, with its flat roof and parapet removed; it features roughcast walls with smooth rendered banding and large fixed glazed windows to each elevation.
The garage first appears on the valuation map dated 1954. In 1953 the plot was described as a house, garage, offices and land valued at £50, occupied by William Barker Junior and another. The valuer noted: "This farm has been sold to the Barker Bros who have erected a plain motor repair garage and service station in the Main Street, close to the dwelling house… Portion of the agricultural buildings are in use as an oil store, which parts have been removed to make room for the garage. There are two petrol pumps with 1000 gallon tanks. Private electricity supply to garage only, no water." The garage was recorded as having an area of 254 square yards.
