Description
A pair of attached three-bay two-storey former houses, now used as a single commercial unit, built around 1910 on the south side of Main Street in Carrickmore. While of local interest, the pair are not among the best examples of their type and have been compromised by various alterations and additions.
The building is rectangular on plan with two-storey flat-roofed extensions to the rear linking to storage buildings. The roofs are pitched artificial slate, with partly natural slate to the rear and terracotta ridge tiles. A roughcast chimney rises from the central party wall. The walls are smooth rendered with banded quoins over a painted plinth.
The principal elevation faces north-east. At the left section, a central timber panelled entrance door with transom light is flanked on the left by large square-headed double-leaf vertically-sheeted timber loading doors and on the right by a large fixed glazed window, with three windows at first floor and banded quoins at right. The windows here are segmental-arched-headed timber-framed 1/1 sliding sash with moulded architraves and shared painted masonry sills.
At the right section, a central replacement double-leaf timber panelled glazed entrance door with transom light is flanked on both sides by large timber casement shopfront windows, with fluted detail to the walling and four windows at first floor. These windows are square-headed timber-framed 2/2 sliding sash with moulded architraves and shared painted masonry sills supported on corbelled brackets.
The south-east elevation is abutted by 32 Main Street. The south-west elevation is abutted by two two-storey flat-roofed extensions and a single-storey link block leading to a double-height storage warehouse. The north-west elevation is abutted by 26 Main Street.
The building is directly accessed from the street to the north, with a storage yard and single-storey outbuildings to the rear, bounded by timber fence and hedging.
Historically, the site is mentioned in records from 1860–1929 as a market yard and sheds, and shown on the town plan of 1905–1911 as open space with rear buildings. The current building was first recorded in 1928 as a garage and workshop owned and occupied by M Daly, valued at £4. By 1934 it was described as a shop, petrol filling station and offices, with two petrol tanks and valued at £15. In 1935 a "gateway entrance at side" leading to cycle repair shops at the rear is noted. Michael Daley appears in the Belfast and Ulster Street Directory for 1924 as a cycle agent, first appearing in that year. In 1952, Annie Daly (widow) was the occupier, and she was carrying out renovation work including conversion of the adjacent building into a dance hall. The building first appears on the fourth edition ordnance survey map of 1935.
