Description
The remains of a two-storey terrace house on the south side of Main Street in Carrickmore, built around 1830. The building is the single-bay end section of what was once a larger terrace, and retains its original form, proportions and materials with no alterations or modernisation. As part of a group, these houses represent an increasingly rare example of urban vernacular architecture of a type that is fast disappearing.
The structure is square-on-plan with a single-storey lean-to extension to the south-west. The pitched roof is covered with natural slate and topped with blue and black clay ridge tiles, with a red brick chimney. The walls are lime-rendered over rubble construction and rest on a projecting plinth. Windows are square-headed and timber-framed with 1/1 sliding sash design; all have painted sandstone sills.
The principal elevation faces north-east and contains a single window at ground floor level, surmounted by a 6/6 sliding sash window at first floor. The south-east gable is abutted by the neighbouring property at 40 Main Street, with the exposed section above eaves left blank. The south-west elevation contains a single window at first-floor level; at ground floor it is abutted by a smoothly rendered lean-to extension containing a vertically-sheeted timber door. The north-west gable is exposed, rendered smooth to eaves height with exposed rubble above, showing evidence of an adjoining building that has since been removed.
The house is directly accessed from the street to the north. To the south lies a small yard enclosed by single hedging and timber fencing fronting the street. Materials include natural slate roof, lime-rendered walls, timber windows and cast-iron rainwater goods.
Historical records indicate that buildings were present on the site from the 1833 First Edition Ordnance Survey map, though the present structure appears to date from around 1865. Valuation town plans show a building recorded during the Townland Valuation period (1828–40), but definitive identification is difficult. The current building corresponds to a property initially valued at £1 10 shillings in the Annual Revisions (1860–1929). A marginal note mentions "Two new houses in progress here", and a fieldbook amendment from 1865 records a house and yard occupied by James McGadrickan and leased from Peter Fox, valued at £2 10 shillings along with its now-demolished western neighbour. Various occupiers are documented thereafter. In 1935, the Munster and Leinster Bank of Cork leased the house from Peter Fox for use as a small office on certain days as required, valued at £3.
