Description

Ballynahatty Bridge is a three-span road bridge built around 1820, carrying Ballynahatty Road over Ballynahatty Water. The bridge appears to have been constructed in stages, with the projecting east arch possibly extended later, evidenced by variations in the stonework. This phased building approach is an unusual characteristic for bridge construction of this era and adds to the bridge's character and significance within the locality. It stands in a rural setting, and the parapet wall continues eastward, acting as a boundary wall along the riverbank with segmental coping.

The bridge is constructed of coursed rubble stone for the spandrels and parapet, with flat coping. The piers sit on rendered plinths and have V-shaped cutwaters; the easternmost pier has a cutwater of random rubble. An abutment and parapet section to the east have been partially replaced with squared sandstone. The three segmental-headed arches are formed with rubble voussoirs, and the easternmost arch has projecting rubble spandrels that create a platform at the carriageway level. The arch soffits are rubble.

The bridge is depicted on all four Ordnance Survey editions, captioned ‘Ballynahatty Bridge.’ Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1833, 1853, 1905-6, and 1937-8, confirm its presence. It is noted that a previous listing (HB11/05/011) referred to this bridge, but subsequent investigation determined it to be a railway bridge located to the east.
