Description

A small single-storey dwelling built around 1820, displaying many essential characteristics of the vernacular tradition. The house is a detached three-bay structure of rubblestone construction, lime-washed in white, with a natural slate pitched roof, black clay ridge tiles, and three large rendered chimneys. It stands on the east side of Drumquin Road at a T-junction, with its west gable fronting the road at a lower level than the main road surface, providing an attractive feature in the roadscape.

The front elevation, facing south, features a three-bay arrangement with square-headed window openings and a central windbreaker entrance porch with a lean-to slate roof and replacement timber door opening directly onto the road. The rear elevation also has three bays, with a central outshot having a catslide natural slate roof. To the left of the outshot is a square-headed window opening containing an original 3/6 timber sash window with exposed sash box. The east gable is blank. The house originally had direct entry, and windows are now a mix of replacement timber casement, uPVC, and one 6/6 timber sash, with concrete sills. The roof is finished with plastic rainwater goods to timber fascia.

The interior has largely lost its original fabric. The building first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1855. Griffith's Valuation records it from 1856 as a house and garden valued at 9 shillings for the house and 1 shilling for the garden, leased by Arthur Little from Mary Chism, later amended to Reverend John Crockett. By 1876 it was designated as a house and shop with Andrew Chisholm as tenant, leasing from John G Smyly, with the valuation rising to £1. The shop use had ceased by 1901 when John Cunningham became lessor to James Scott, and the valuation dropped to 10 shillings. Matthew Scott held the lease by 1918. In 1934–35, William Hamilton occupied the house leased from Matthew Scott, valued at £5 5 shillings, reduced on appeal to £4. Contemporary valuation records describe it as a labourer's cottage comprising a kitchen and two rooms, with one room uninhabitable, lacking both floor and ceiling and then used for hens with entrance through a back window. The kitchen had a stone floor and no ceiling; another room had a wooden floor and ceiling. The building measures approximately 43 by 16 by 11 feet with an outshot of 9 by 3 by 6 feet.

Due to the loss of interior detailing and other alterations, the house's architectural interest has been reduced, though its vernacular character remains evident in its construction and surviving external features.
