Description

Craig Memorial Hall is a five-bay Victorian neo-Gothic gable-ended hall built in 1878 on a triangular island site bounded by Infirmary Road to the west, Northland Road to the east, and a small laneway to the south in Londonderry. It was designed by John Guy Ferguson, a prominent local architect and official architect to the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe of the Church of Ireland, and constructed by the local building firm of Robert Colhoun.

The hall is constructed of local schist with sandstone dressings. The principal west-facing elevation, overlooking Infirmary Road, features a projecting gable with a central circular datestone of Barony Glen sandstone with hoodmould and label stop, flanked by lancet casement windows and a blocked-up roof vent above. Ashlar banding in red Drumfries sandstone runs across sill, shoulder and head levels, with ashlar Barony Glen sandstone quoins at the corners. The entrance, set within a later projecting gable, is bounded by plain cast iron railings on a low rendered boundary wall with cast iron gates and gateposts. A later extension to the south side features a hipped slate roof and modern flush timber door.

The pitched slate roof is fitted with crested clay ridge tiles and sandstone barges with ridgestone embellished with a decorative cast iron finial. The north elevation displays a large central three-light plate tracery window with a rose window and four quatrefoil lights of Barony Glen sandstone, with an ashlar Drumfries sandstone hoodband and replacement iron casement frame. Triple lancet roof vents are positioned at the apex. The gabled transept wing to the west is notable for its cusped arched doorway flanked by short colonettes and original timber sheeted door, with a modern rooflight above. The east elevation, facing onto Francis Street, has a battered base with blocked-up basement openings. Five bays of symmetrical fenestration are present. The south elevation features a central circular window flanked by round-headed lancet windows, with a single lancet roof vent at the apex. The original windows have been lost and replaced with modern iron casement frames.

The building was originally designed as a schoolhouse, opening as Craig Memorial Hall National School in 1878, and was also utilised as a hall for the neighbouring Christ Church for cultural and social events. On 28 September 1912, the hall served as the venue for the signing of the Ulster Covenant, a document of considerable historical significance. The school continued in use until 1929, after which the Select Vestry of Christ Church used the building solely as a church hall. In 1978 the building was included within the Clarendon Street Conservation Area and was listed in 1979.

Despite the loss of its original windows, the building retains sufficient architectural character through its simple plan form, detailing consistent with Victorian neo-Gothic style, its prominent island site location, and its group value within the Clarendon Conservation Area. The hall represents an important example of Ferguson's restrained neo-Gothic work, characterised by crisp square finishes to window reveals, piers and string courses.
