Description

This is a single-storey, three-bay direct entry building located beside 27 Blackhill Road, Castlederg, County Tyrone. It originally began as a two-bay house that was later extended to the northeast with the addition of a bedroom, flanked by a shed constructed of corrugated iron sheeting. The compartment on the left-hand (southwest) side has been converted for storage use. The building faces southeast and is situated on the northwest side of a secondary road that runs southwest for approximately one and a half miles from the Drumquin/Castlederg road, roughly three miles from Castlederg.

The wall construction is of random rubble stone, squared at the extremities. The front elevation and gables are whitened, while the rear stone facing, including the bed outshot, is exposed. A black base is visible on the front elevation, with the lower part of the southwest gable rendered. The roof is covered with corrugated iron. A corrugated Perspex panel is set into the front roof slope over the kitchen, and small sheets of corrugated iron mark the position of a former chimney stack. All external doors are of corrugated iron construction, paired for the storage bay and single for the other compartments.

The entrance to the former kitchen is sheltered by a windbreak porch roofed with a single slab of stone. To the right of the porch, a glassless, metal-framed window is sealed externally with a shutter constructed of vertical timber planks, with a stone sill of traditional depth and a timber lintel.

The building appears in its current form on both the 1833 Ordnance Survey map and the 1855 revision. It is believed to have originated as a thatched house, constructed between 1820 and 1839. It is currently used as a store.
