Description
A well-detailed two-storey vernacular laundry building, constructed around 1810 and substantially remodelled around 1870. The building is situated at the south end of the enclosed farmyard to Holy Hill House, a substantial country house of the Plantation era located north-east of Strabane town.
The laundry is rectangular in plan, comprising a laundry on the ground floor and a coachmen's house on the first floor. It is built of limewashed random rubble stone using local materials, with a pitched natural slate roof and a painted plinth. Windows are generally timber sliding sash with exposed boxes and no sills. The building retains no rainwater goods.
The north (front) elevation features a central 2/2 sash window at first floor level. The ground floor has a centrally placed painted timber sheeted door with a 4/4 window to its right and a smaller painted timber sheeted door to the left. The eastern end is enclosed by the farmyard wall. The south elevation, formerly an internal wall where an extension has been partially removed, displays exposed random rubble. The west elevation contains a replacement timber casement window (4/2) at ground floor level and a timber sash to the attic; it abuts the forge building.
Although some elements have been replaced, the changes have been sympathetically carried out using salvaged materials. The building appears on all three editions of the Ordnance Survey maps (1833, 1854, 1905). According to a marginal note in the Valuation Revisions, the building underwent major remodelling in 1872 (three years before the record date) that converted it to a laundry. The addition of tongue and groove sheeting throughout the laundry and accommodation around this time added £3 to the value of the house and buildings, a relatively substantial increase for the period.
During the 1870s, Holy Hill was owned by William Sinclair (died 1899), son of James, who had served as High Sheriff in County Donegal in 1854 and became Deputy Lieutenant of Tyrone in 1876.
The building retains its style and proportions and forms part of an extensive group of ancillary structures associated with Holy Hill House. The outbuildings, as a group, reflect the evolving needs and efficiencies associated with the running of a large estate. Holy Hill House and its associated outbuildings lie in the established Holy Hill demesne with lawns, mature parkland and farmland, situated on undulating land. The building has group value with the other listed structures at Holy Hill.
