Description

A detached two-bay two-storey Arts and Crafts gatelodge to Dullerton Manor, dated 1898, located to the south side of Dullerton Road. The lodge is well maintained and retains all original features to the façade.

The building is rectangular on plan with a projecting gabled bay to the east. The pitched roof is covered in Rosemary clay tiles with crested terracotta ridge tiles and deep overhanging eaves over exposed rafter ends, supported by timber brackets on kneelers. Timber bargeboards frame the gables, and a single brick corbelled chimney rises from the structure.

The walls are built in English garden wall bonded red brick at ground floor over a stepped plinth, with roughcast and decorative half-timbering at first floor, creating the mock Tudor styling characteristic of the period. The principal elevation faces east, where a projecting gabled bay contains a central window flanked by sidelights with a shared bracketed sill at ground floor. The jettied first floor is supported on corbelled brackets and contains a canted oriel window on timber brackets surmounted by a projecting apex.

Windows throughout are square-headed timber framed casements with brick voussoirs at ground floor. A segmental-headed vertically sheeted timber door in a bead moulded surround with moulded keyblock opens to the north elevation. To the right of the main bay, a lean-to porch canopy is supported on turned posts over a brick plinth and is surmounted by a balustrade.

The south elevation consists of a gable at the left containing a window at first floor, with a segmental-headed entrance door at ground floor right leading to an enclosed yard. The west elevation features a central stepped projecting chimney-breast surmounted by a tall corbelled chimney flanked by console brackets, with a gabled dormer at first floor to the right containing a single window.

The lodge is set to the south of the entrance drive to Dullerton Manor and is enclosed by an enclosed yard to the south containing a lean-to extension. Brick walling surmounted by terracotta coping bounds the property, with a segmental-headed vertically sheeted timber entrance door to the east. The lodge is bounded by brick walling to the east (originally surmounted by railings, now removed), with hedging to the south and west.

Rain water goods are cast-iron cavetto profiled gutters and square downpipes.

The lodge is recorded in the Annual Revisions in 1903 and appears on the third edition of the Ordnance Survey map in 1905, positioned northeast of an older gate lodge belonging to the previous house on the site. It was valued at £7 with a leaseholder of General William D. Bond. The architect is not known. The picturesque design of the lodge forms a fitting entrance to the large estate and makes a positive contribution to the formal setting of the original house, now demolished. The lodge has group value with the listed Dullerton House and outbuildings.
