Description
These are a group of model semi-detached cottages built in the later 19th century, likely between 1860 and 1879, under the direction of the Honourable Irish Society. They were intended as prototypes for similar dwellings and, despite some alterations, retain elements of their original design. The cottages are situated on Culmore Point Road, fronting onto the River Foyle, just north of Culmore Point, and are set back a small distance from the water's edge by a concrete embankment.
The houses are arranged in three pairs, with each dwelling having front and rear gardens. They are built with handmade brick facades, two bays wide, and feature pitched roofs with projecting porches. A distinctive feature is the wide, square-proportioned ground floor windows, placed high and sheltered by a hood moulding. Centrally placed, pitched-roof dormer windows are positioned above the main roofline, with their cills just above the gutter. A plaster frieze runs under the gutter, notably lacking the cast iron decorative brackets common on other similar houses. Rainwater gutters feed into a centrally placed decorative cast iron trunkhead with a single downpipe between the two dwellings, secured by decorative brackets. The slate roof includes a central chimney between the dwellings, altered to incorporate rustic brickwork and four chimney pots replacing the original Tudor style chimneys. The gable roofs extend with a lean-to over the rear portion, and the gable walls have been plastered with a new back return extension. The porch has been rebuilt in brick, reusing original decorative bargeboards and a pointed timber finial. The dormers themselves remain unaltered, featuring slate sheathing, decorated barges, and finials. The brickwork is of a Flemish bond style. Each house has a sheeted front door and windows divided into 12 equal panes, with top-hung opening lights at the head. The dormer windows have a triangular pointed shape with a central diamond pane at the apex. The front gable features a ground floor bedroom window and a centrally placed first-floor window. A door has been added to the gable in a new location.
The Culmore estate belonged to the Irish Society from 1860. Richard Williamson was appointed surveyor for the Society, following designs based on those of Henry Roberts (1803-76), who had previously developed designs for the Society aimed at improving the conditions of the working class. Construction took place between 1863 and 1864. The cottages are now in private ownership. An Ordnance Survey map from 1853 identified a terrace on this site named 'Kings Row'.
