Description
These are a notable example of model semi-detached cottages built under the direction of the Irish Society, intended as prototypes for similar dwellings. While some alterations have occurred over time, they retain original features and details. The cottages, numbered 76 to 86, are situated along the River Foyle, just north of Culmore Point, set back from the water's edge by a concrete embankment. Each property includes a front and rear garden.
The cottages are white, smooth-rendered, and two bays wide, with pitched roofs. A projecting porch shelters the front door, and a wide, square-proportioned ground-floor window is topped by a decorative hood moulding. Centrally placed, pitched-roof dormer windows are located above the ground floor, with their cills aligned with the gutter line. A plaster frieze sits below the gutter, which incorporates cast iron gutters with concealed brackets. Rainwater flows into a centrally placed decorative cast iron trunkhead with a single downpipe serving two dwellings, secured by decorative brackets. The slate roof features a central chimney between each pair of cottages, which have been altered to include rustic brickwork and four chimney pots replacing original Tudor-style chimneys. The roofs are gable-ended, with a lean-to roof over the rear portion. The gable walls are plastered, and a new back return extension has been added. The porch has been rebuilt in brick with painted barges and retains the original pointed timber finial. The dormer roof is clad in slate to match the rest of the terrace. A sheeted door sits to the side of the porch, and a timber casement window is present at the front of the property. The window is divided into 12 equal panes with top-hung opening lights. The dormer window is triangular and pointed, with a diamond-shaped pane at the top centre. The gable features a ground floor bedroom window and a centrally placed first-floor window. A door has been inserted into the gable in a new location.
The Culmore estate was returned to the Irish Society in 1860, at which point Richard Williamson was appointed surveyor in place of Fitzgibbon Louch. The Society desired cottages to be constructed fronting the river at the back strand of Culmore Point. Williamson’s plans and elevations were based on those of Henry Roberts (1803-76), who had previously prepared designs for the Society aimed at improving conditions for the working classes. Construction took place between 1863 and 1864. The cottages are now in private ownership. An Ordnance Survey Map from 1853 refers to a terrace on this site as 'Kings Row'.
