Strabane Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Strabane, Co Tyrone

Strabane Cemetery is a municipal cemetery laid out around 1900, situated between Cemetery Road and Milltown Road in Strabane, County Tyrone. It occupies a roughly triangular plot of rising ground, bordered to the west by Milltown Road, to the northeast by Cemetery Road, and to the south by the grounds of Strabane Grammar School. The cemetery is partly enclosed by a rendered wall and partly by an embankment with a low stone retaining wall. A narrow vehicle gateway provides access from Cemetery Road, featuring square, rendered, pyramidal-capped piers and plain wrought-iron gates. Within the cemetery, grave plots are arranged around a regular grid of tarmac-covered pathways, and the graves themselves feature a variety of headstones and surrounds with little uniformity. The cemetery is shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1905 and was likely created by the newly formed Strabane Urban District Council to replace an older graveyard off Patrick Street/Church Street. Supporting documentation includes valuation revisions and town plans from 1897 to 1955 held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, as well as a directory from 1905 and a survey report from 1970.
