Description

This is the site of a former single-storey thatched cottage on the northeast side of Townsend Street in Strabane. The house, which probably dated from before 1833, was demolished sometime after 1983 to make way for a new housing development.

When surveyed in 1970, the building was described as having modern grey roughcast walls with rendered quoins and a hipped thatched roof in good condition. The windows were drop-hung sashes divided vertically into three panes, set in plain architraves. The hipped thatch roof was noted as unusual for the locality at that time.

The house appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1833-34, matching the plan of the building that occupied the site until its demolition. The property can be traced in valuation records from 1857 onwards, when it was occupied by Daniel Patton with William Martin as the immediate lessor. By 1873 the valuers referred to it as "Green Cottage", with a rateable value of £3, which may indicate building works around that period that gave it a somewhat planned picturesque appearance and established its name. The property later became known as "Green Lane Cottage".

Subsequent tenants included Francis McColgan (from 1896), James McPhelomy (from 1909), Thomas McCrossan (from 1919-20), and Michael Christy (from sometime between 1930 and 1935), with Charles Devine noted as lessor at that time. Michael Christy acquired the freehold in 1948 and remained resident until 1970, when Una Christy is recorded as the occupant. The building was demolished sometime after 1983.
