Description

Two-bay direct entry vernacular house built around 1800, located on the west side of Lisdoo Road in Clady. The detached single-storey rendered and thatched house faces east onto what is now the rear garden of a replacement dwelling erected around 2005. The building's setting has been significantly compromised by this nearby modern construction positioned between the historic house and the road.

The rectangular house comprises a main block with a single-storey attic extension to the north and a rubble byre to the south. The pitched thatch roof has cement skews to each gable and two rendered chimneystacks. The south byre has a pitched natural slate roof with black clay ridge tiles. The north extension has a pitched corrugated asbestos roof with a rendered chimney to the north gable and terracotta ridge tiles. Metal rainwater goods serve the north and south additions.

The walls of the main house and north extension are rendered and painted with ruled-and-lined finish, whilst the south byre displays lime-washed rubblestone walling. The two-bay front east elevation contains square-headed window openings (enlarged) with concrete sills and hardwood casement windows, a square-headed door opening to the right with a replacement hardwood panelled door, and a further window opening to the extension. The south gable is abutted by the rubble byre. The west rear elevation has two window openings and a door opening to the left; the rightmost window opening has an irregular shape.

Behind the main house, a concrete-paved yard is enclosed on three sides by single-storey outbuildings built around 1920, with pitched corrugated asbestos and iron roofs, painted concrete block walling, and square-headed openings with sheeted timber doors and window shutters.

Ordnance Survey mapping confirms a building was present at this location from the first edition (1832–3). An outbuilding appeared on the second edition (1855), with further and larger outbuildings shown in successive editions. Griffith's Valuation (1856–64) records Michael Skay leasing the property from Reverend Peter B Maxwell at a valuation of £2 10s. The property subsequently passed to John Doherty in 1868. By 1902, Catherine and John Doherty occupied it jointly, becoming owners in fee in 1909 under early twentieth-century land purchase legislation. By 1934, Dan McAuley was the occupier, and the building valuation had risen to £2 15s with £1 for outbuildings. The house comprised a kitchen, bedroom, reception room, two small bedrooms, and a porch. The main house construction is rubble masonry and thatch, with an addition of rubble masonry and corrugated iron.

The house is now vacant. Whilst the intact roof structure and modest proportions constitute noteworthy vernacular characteristics, the enlarged window openings and modern replacement dwelling immediately adjacent to this property have substantially detracted from its external appearance. Planning permission was granted for the replacement dwelling with a condition requiring the demolition of this historic house.
