Description

33 Concess Road, Sion Mills is a detached four-bay two-storey rendered house built around 1800, located on the west side of Concess Road with access via a lane to the northeast. The building is rectangular on plan, facing east.

The house is constructed of rubble masonry with cement render to the front and gabled elevations and rough-cast lime render to the rear. The front elevation features rusticated rendered soldier quoins. The roof is pitched with natural slate, terracotta ridge tiles, and cement barges to the gables. Four rendered brick chimneystacks with clay pots project through the roof, served by steel rainwater goods on drive-through brackets.

The front elevation has a central single-storey flat-roof entrance porch with cornice and arched openings on all three sides. The four bays above contain 2/2 timber sash windows with smooth render surrounds and square-headed openings with concrete sills. The south gable elevation is blank. The north gable has a pair of square-headed window openings at first floor level containing 2/2 and 3/6 timber sash windows.

The rear elevation is multi-bay with diminutive square-headed window openings below eaves level fitted with four-pane timber casement windows and slate sills. A lean-to rear entrance porch with corrugated iron roof and timber plank door is positioned to the right. To the left is a shallow lean-to projection with corrugated iron roof. At the centre is a 3/6 timber sash window with exposed sash box and stone sill, alongside a square-headed door opening with timber plank door.

Associated with the house are a rear outshot or lean-to and a range of single and two-storey rubble outbuildings positioned to the south and west.

Historically, buildings are documented on this site in the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1832–3. The Townland Valuation of 1828–40 does not list any buildings meeting the five-pound-per-year threshold. Griffith's Valuation of 1859 records a house, offices and land valued at £4, occupied by Robert McFarland, who leased the property from the Marquess of Abercorn. A marginal note dated May 1860 references new offices not valued. The property remained in the McFarland family until 1901 when Andrew McKean became occupier. McKean acquired ownership in fee under early twentieth-century land acquisition legislation by 1907. After 1934, James McKean became the owner, with the valuation raised to £7 15s and £1 10s for outbuildings, suggesting rebuilding or remodelling in preceding years. At that time the house comprised two rooms, a kitchen, scullery, two small rooms, pantry, four bedrooms and two rough stores (unceiled).

The house appears to have been raised and its front elevation renovated around 1900, making it an interesting early Victorian structure that retains features spanning a considerable period. However, the building is currently in too derelict a state to qualify for listing.
