Description

This is a double-height, symmetrical, modernist Roman Catholic Church built around 1970 to designs by Patrick Haughey. The design draws inspiration from an earlier church designed by Haughey at St. Patricks, Dunamanagh. The church has a square plan with rounded corners and a single-storey, rectangular projecting porch to the front elevation. A continuous single-storey element extends to the rear, incorporating side entrances, a side chapel, and a vestry.

The external walls are load-bearing, featuring brown concrete brick at ground level and a continuous anodised copper cladding to the first-floor clerestory. Rectangular windows are set within splayed reveals and feature an asymmetrical arrangement of panes in clear embossed glass. There are nine windows and two corner windows on each elevation. The front porch has two solid gable walls of brown concrete brick with a flat roof and a deep soffit clad in anodised copper, sheltering a recessed timber and glass entrance screen.

Inside, a plain rectangular lobby leads to the main church via a full-length timber and glass screen, with flagstone flooring and a copper panelled ceiling. A plaque commemorates an RSUA Award of Merit dated 1971. The church is situated on a large tarmacked car park on the outskirts of Strabane. A two-storey parochial house and a two-storey parish office, linked by single-storey garages and parking units of a similar style and likely contemporary, are located behind the church.

The building was surveyed initially but not listed, and a partial survey was only undertaken in a later assessment due to insufficient architectural or historical significance to warrant a full listing.
