Description
Cavandoragh Methodist Church is a detached single-cell Methodist Church with simple Gothic detailing, built circa 1860, located on the east side of Cavandarragh Road, Castlederg, County Tyrone. The building is rectangular on plan with a gabled extension added circa 2005 to the south-east and a single-storey gabled porch rebuilt in 2005 to the north-east.
The roof is pitched natural slate with blue and black clay ridge tiles over a corbelled eaves course. A roughcast chimney serves the extension. The walls are roughcast render over a smooth plinth with hammered chamfered sandstone quoins, now painted, which conceal the original finish. Windows are lancet-headed containing cast iron lattice lights set in painted sandstone surrounds with painted masonry sills.
The principal elevation faces east and contains a single window at its exposed centre section. The left side is abutted by the gabled extension, which contains two square-headed timber casement windows surmounted by a blind oculus. The north elevation features a single square-headed window and timber entrance door. The right side is abutted by the porch, which contains a square-headed vertically-sheeted timber door in a stepped chamfered surround. A further single window appears on the north elevation, which also contains a large plate tracery window with a quatrefoil window featuring leaded stained glass. The south gable is blank. The west elevation is three windows wide.
The church is set within a modern churchyard on a rural site bounded by roughcast walling with concrete coping, surmounted by steel railings to the north. Access is through square pillars supporting a pair of steel gates. Cast-iron half-round replacement gutters and round downpipes are fitted throughout.
The building first appears on the 1905 Ordnance Survey map captioned as Methodist Church. It is listed in Griffith's Valuation of 1856-64 as a Methodist Meeting House leased from the Marquis of Abercorn and valued at £2. Annual revision records from 1870 show the value was raised to £5, with a margin note reading "17x8x1½A Hammered ashlar cut stone coins", indicating a substantial remodelling of the building in 1870 which may have amounted to a complete rebuild. Stylistically the building can be dated to 1855-70. A porch on the east elevation which appeared on the 1936 Ordnance Survey map was replaced in 2005. An extension was also added in 2005 and the interior doors, floor and wall finishes and timber ceiling were replaced at the same time.
The extensive renovation circa 2005 has resulted in the exterior and interior of the building losing its special architectural interest.
