Description

This is a single-storey brick-built shed, likely dating from around 1900, located on the north side of Railway Street, Strabane, adjacent to a public house. It was formerly a commercial garage and is now disused, being in poor condition and belonging to the neighbouring public house.

The building follows a roughly rectangular plan, though the southern elevation is slightly skewed. It measures approximately 13 metres by 7.5 metres. The southern, road-facing gable is rendered and was originally a large vehicle entrance, now boarded up and painted with a large “Guinness” advertisement. The longer eastern elevation is in painted brick and features four evenly-spaced window openings, three of which retain original glazing. The northern gable is mostly clad in timber, with a small area covered in corrugated plastic, although much of the timber cladding has fallen away. It is abutted on this side by a lower, single-storey building, which is another shed. The roof is a curved Belfast truss, covered in felt that is now decayed and missing in places.

The Belfast truss, developed in the mid-19th century, was designed to provide efficient, lightweight, and long-span roofs driven by the industrial revolution. The earliest known reference to these structures dates back to 1866, and they were manufactured by McTear & Co. until 1908. Another manufacturer, Anderson & Co., began production in 1886, releasing a revised Mk II version in 1896; which maximized long spans while maintaining a light weight. The term "Belfast truss" is now widely applied to all timber bowstring trusses where internal bracing members connect to the top curved member. This building was surveyed as part of a Belfast Roof Truss survey, and is considered to have industrial archaeological interest.
