Description
A late 19th-century single-arch concrete road bridge over the Glenmornan River, situated 3 kilometres east-south-east of Artigarvan in Co Tyrone. The bridge stands in an unspoilt rural setting surrounded by fields, approximately 130 metres south of St Joseph's Church.
The bridge is constructed entirely of mass concrete. Its defining feature is a semicircular orthogonal arch with a span of 3.8 metres, which is unusual for concrete bridges of this period. Rather than adopting the horizontal beam design typical of concrete structures, the bridge mimics the traditional form of 19th-century masonry and brick-arched bridges. The abutments and soffit of the arch bear clear marks from the timber shuttering (falsework) used during construction. The spandrels on both elevations are finished with smooth cement render.
The concrete parapets measure 4.9 metres in length and incorporate a high admixture of random rubble. Their tops are chamfered. The approach walls are slightly splayed and step inward from base to top, with outside faces 45 centimetres thick and no terminal piers. The surrounding road is embanked above the floodplain.
The bridge replaced a ford across the Glenmornan Stream, visible on the 1854 Ordnance Survey map approximately 50 metres downstream (west) of the current structure. The first documented reference appears in the Co Tyrone Grand Jury Presentment for the Barony of Lower Strabane dated 22 December 1893, which approved an application to build a 15-foot span bridge at a cost of £120 to connect the townlands of Brownhill and Knocknahorna. Construction was completed before 1906, with the bridge clearly shown on the 1905 Ordnance Survey map. Evidence from a newspaper reference to a public meeting at the 'new' bridge at Glenmoran Church in August 1905 suggests construction took place between 1893 and 1895.
The bridge is significant as an early and authenticated example of structural concrete use in Ireland, predating several better-known reinforced-concrete structures. Evidence indicates it is constructed of mass concrete rather than reinforced concrete. The large stones incorporated into the parapets would have restricted the placement of reinforcing bars, and the arched span design requires no structural reinforcement, unlike horizontal spans. While reinforced-concrete bridge technology was being developed contemporaneously—including Francoise Hennebique's patented system (1892) and the American Kahn system—this bridge represents an innovative application of plain mass concrete in a utilitarian rural context, demonstrating how concrete technology was still in its infancy in Ireland during the 1890s.
