Bullaun, 21 Glenconway Road, Dungiven, Co Londonderry, BT47 4NY

This is a sandstone bullaun stone, likely dating from before 1600. It was found on private land in the townland of Glenconway, near Dungiven. The stone is roughly octagonal, measuring approximately 534mm across and 380mm high. It features a central hollow, 305mm in diameter and 200mm deep. The outer sides of the octagon are irregular, and two grooves are visible, suggesting a possible use for sharpening blades. While its purpose remains speculative, it may have had an ecclesiastical function, such as a font. Local tradition suggested it was used for crushing gorse/whin shoots and mixing with crushed corn to improve the coats of horses. Estyn Evans described similar stones as "basin-stones" and larger versions as "knocking stones" used to prepare barley meal by pounding grain. These knocking stones were often communal items found in the ruins of old settlements. The stone is currently considered an archaeological site and is in a derelict condition, exhibiting vernacular characteristics.
