Description

An interesting group of vernacular farm buildings dating from the early 19th century, sited on the verge of Glenconway Road with their layout and disposition unchanged since the 1830s. The complex comprises a dwelling, outbuildings, and a farmyard bounded by the house on the west side and outbuildings to the south and north, with gateway access onto the farmyard.

The house is three bays long with smooth rendered external walls, colour washed, and a roof of corrugated iron painted red. The entrance door opens from the farmyard, probably originally as direct entry to the kitchen, which has a single window overlooking the farmyard. To the north of the door is a room with two windows, now with concrete cills and wider than the kitchen window, suggesting two windows have replaced a former single opening. A bed outshot extends from the kitchen. Three windows face toward the roadside, with a further room beyond the kitchen having a single window with a higher head and cill, indicating a higher floor level. The substantial amount of walling above window and door openings suggests either that a thatch roof has been removed or that a loft formerly extended the length of the house. A window opening is present on the north gable, with red brick chimneys serving the north gable and kitchen fireplace. The unpainted corrugated iron roof is fitted with half-round metal gutters and downpipes. All windows and doors are presently boarded up.

At the north gable is a lean-to shed with low pitched roof and corrugated iron cladding. At the south gable, an outbuilding extends in line with the house before turning at right angles, featuring smooth rendered walls, one narrow door opening and one wide opening extending to eaves line, each accessing the farmyard. This structure has corrugated iron roofing painted red, without chimneys, and half-round metal guttering with a single downpipe.

Opposite this, at the north end of the farmyard, stands another outbuilding at right angles to the house but unconnected, providing the access gap between these two structures. This building has smooth rendered white colour-washed walls with two wide double door openings from the yard, each faced with corrugated iron. It features a double pitched roof of corrugated iron with lengths of translucent sheeting to light the interior, and a small lean-to at the west gable.

The buildings are shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1832, with little change to their disposition since except in external materials. The farmyard currently has a neat gravel finish. The adaptation of corrugated iron cladding does not detract from the plan form and is well worth recording.
