Description
This is a one and a half-storey former schoolhouse built around 1840, set on the east side of Whitepark Road, just over half a mile southwest of Ballycastle. The building backs onto Ramoan old graveyard, with graves positioned close to the rear elevation. It was originally constructed in connection with the nearby Ramoan Church of Ireland parish church, first appearing on the Ordnance Survey map of 1856 marked as "School Ho." and recorded in the 1859 valuation. The building ceased to be used as a school in the mid-twentieth century, probably following post-war education reforms, and was subsequently converted to a dwelling house.
The building is roughly rectangular in plan, with a steeply pitched gabled roof and decorative bargeboards. The entire façade is finished in painted roughcast. The main roof has a pronounced overhang with exposed rafter ends to the west. The roof is covered in artificial slate and contains Velux windows to each side. A small brick chimneystack sits on the south gable.
The asymmetrical north-facing front elevation consists of the uneven gable of the original building with a flat-roofed section to the left (east). Roughly at the centre of the gable is a segmental-headed doorway with modern glazed timber door and segmental fanlight with spoke tracery. Windows flank the doorway, with further examples to the left within the flat-roofed section. The upper level has two windows; a larger single window that formerly occupied this space is indicated by its surviving cill. The west elevation contains two windows similar to those flanking the doorway on the north gable. The south elevation shows the gable of the original building to the left with a modern projection to the right featuring a steeply pitched gabled roof. The south gable upper level contains two more windows matching those on the north gable; the ground floor appears to have two openings, one likely a window and one possibly a doorway, though not fully visible. All windows feature modern multi-pane frames with label moulding.
The east elevation consists of a flat-roofed section that appears to have been built in two stages, with an earlier section to the right (north) and a deeper, more recent section to the left. This section contains a single window located right of centre, with a projecting chimneystack to its left. The flat roof is covered in asphalt. A small pitched section to this elevation has a Velux window.
The building was extended to the east side in the mid to later twentieth century, with modernisation recorded by C.E.B. Brett in 1971 as having recently occurred, including unsuitable window insertions to the upper north gable. A projection to the southeast corner with an extremely steeply pitched gabled roof was added sometime after this, possibly in the 1980s or early 1990s. This modern projection is of limited architectural interest. PVCu rainwater goods are present throughout.
