Description
14 School Lane, Castlerock
This semi-detached stone house dates from around 1870 and forms one half of a modest pair built along the north side of School Lane, south of Castlerock village and east of Downhill Demesne. The pair was constructed as part of the Downhill estate, likely to provide accommodation for staff associated with the nearby Downhill School.
The house is a two-bay, one-and-a-half-storey structure built in random coursed, rock-faced basalt ashlar with tooled sandstone ashlar quoins. The pitched natural slate roof carries roll-moulded black clay ridge tiles and a single brick chimneystack with black clay pots to the west. The east gable features decorative timber bargeboards beneath sheeted overhanging eaves. Ogee-moulded cast-iron guttering is supported on a timber fascia with sheeted overhanging eaves and replacement metal downpipes.
The south front elevation contains two window openings with square-headed, stop-chamfered sandstone ashlar surrounds and sandstone sills, fitted with 2/2 timber sash windows with angled horns. A door opening sits to the east. The east side elevation has a single attic-storey window with a stop-chamfered sandstone surround, sandstone sill, and replacement timber casement window. The west gable is abutted by the adjoining house. A single-storey rear extension built around 2011 is constructed in rock-faced basalt with timber sash windows, sandstone sills, and glazed timber patio doors.
The building was first recorded in valuation fieldbooks between 1864 and 1873, and appears on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1904. It was initially valued at £3, reduced to £2 in 1887, with weekly rent recorded as 1 shilling. The dwellings appear to have been built by Sir Henry Hervey Bruce, third Baronet of Downhill, though documentary evidence suggests no schoolteachers actually lived in the properties.
The first recorded occupier around 1870 was William Lyons, land steward to the Bruce family, who moved to Black Glen Lodge around 1885. He was followed by John Hawkins in 1883 and James Forrest in 1886. At the 1901 census, Margaret Jane Forrest, a widow aged 78, lived here with her daughter employed as a domestic servant at Downhill House; another daughter worked as a seamstress and a son as a farm servant. The four-room house was designated second class. By 1911, the property had passed to George Alexander Reid, a Scotsman employed as a golf greenkeeper, who lived here with his wife and seven children. This reflects Castlerock's development following the formal inauguration of the nine-hole golf links in June 1901 on Bruce family land, which expanded to eighteen holes by 1909.
The First General Revaluation of the early 1930s recorded the accommodation as a kitchen and room on the ground floor with two bedrooms above, with rent set at 10 shillings per month. The house was listed in 1977. The rear extension was rebuilt around 2010. Currently undergoing renovations, the building retains its original external appearance and interior plan, contributing significantly to the heritage character of the Castlerock area.
